Every claim about Diligent below is sourced to Diligent's own material or to a UK government framework listing, with the date we checked it.
Who this comparison is for
Chairs, company secretaries and governance leads at UK organisations that are shortlisting Diligent, or already licensed for it and asking whether its scope matches what the board actually needs. It assumes the board portal question is settled in principle and the open question is what else the platform has to carry: the review cycle, the skills matrix, AI oversight, the evidence trail. What the board needs to decide
Settle these five points before the first supplier call. They decide which of the two shapes fits, and they are cheaper to answer now than after a procurement.
- One entity or a group. Diligent sells Entities as a distinct product for managing subsidiaries alongside the board portal (Diligent solutions, checked on 3 August 2026). A single-entity board pays for suite breadth it will not use; a multi-entity group with a corporate-record problem is exactly who that breadth is built for.
- Whether the effectiveness review is core or an add-on. Provision 21 of the UK Corporate Governance Code 2024 asks for a formal and rigorous annual review of the board, its committees, the chair and individual directors. Decide whether that runs inside the platform you are buying, or as a separate module or a separate engagement.
- Whether AI governance is on the board's agenda. If the board needs structured oversight of AI risk in its own organisation, rather than AI features that help draft the board pack, those are two different capabilities and only one of them is a governance instrument.
- Your procurement route. Public bodies can buy Diligent through the UK Government's G-Cloud framework, which is also the only place Diligent publishes a price at all. Private-sector buyers are quoted.
- How many separate line items the budget has to carry. A suite priced by product means the total depends on how many products end up in scope. Ask for the full list with the first quote, not the second.
How do BoardServe and Diligent compare?
They differ mainly in shape. Diligent sells a governance suite in which board evaluation, minutes and messaging are modules bought alongside the board portal. BoardServe is licensed at organisation level as one platform, in which the review cycle, the skills matrix, AI governance maturity assessments and the audit trail are already part of the same system.

Does Diligent include board effectiveness reviews?
Diligent sells evaluation as a separate purchase. Its G-Cloud 14 listing states that the base contract covers unlimited storage, training, product upgrades and support, and that Diligent Minutes, Diligent Messenger and Diligent Evaluations are available separately at additional cost (checked on 3 August 2026). Confirm which review lenses a quote covers before the budget is set.
That is a normal way to sell a suite, and for a group already buying several Diligent products it keeps the board portal itself uncluttered. It does mean the review is a commercial decision taken separately from the portal decision, at a separate price, on a separate timetable. The distinction to hold on to is between a survey capability and a review instrument: Provision 21 asks for four lenses, the board, its committees, the chair and individual directors, and a whole-board questionnaire covers one of them. How does Diligent's pricing work in the UK?
Diligent does not publish a general commercial price list. The one published UK figure is a public-sector rate card: Diligent BoardBooks Limited lists Diligent Board Portal: Governance Cloud at £700 a licence a year on G-Cloud 14 (checked on 3 August 2026). Outside that procurement route, pricing is quoted after a sales conversation.
Two things follow. First, the £700 figure is a framework rate available to public bodies buying through the Digital Marketplace, not a general commercial price, so a private-sector board should not plan a budget around it. Second, because the modules are priced separately, the meaningful number is the total of the products in scope rather than the portal line on its own. One third-party buyer guide reports incremental costs of $5,000 to $25,000 a year for each additional Diligent application (I'mBoard, checked on 3 August 2026); that is a reported figure from a third-party site, not published by Diligent, and we present it as such. Whichever vendor you are quoting, ask what the renewal uplift is, in writing, before signing.
BoardServe is licensed per organisation and quoted after a walkthrough. That means no like-for-like price comparison is possible here, and this piece does not attempt one: neither platform publishes a general commercial figure, and a comparison built on a public-sector rate card against a quoted licence would be a comparison of two different things.
Is Diligent used by UK organisations?
Yes. Diligent sells into the UK through Diligent BoardBooks Limited, a UK-registered supplier listed on the UK Government's G-Cloud 14 framework, and its trust page lists a Europe (London) hosting region. Diligent's own about page states 25,000 customers and 1 million users across 130 countries (checked on 3 August 2026).
Those are global figures. This research pass found no UK-specific customer count published by Diligent, so treat the scale claim as evidence of a large international business with a UK entity and a UK procurement route, which is what it is. On review sites, Diligent Boards holds 4.7 out of 5 from 341 reviews on Capterra UK, and Diligent reports 4.5 out of 5 from 491 reviews on G2 alongside Leader placement in G2's Summer 2024 Grid Report for board management software (Diligent), both checked on 3 August 2026.
Which of the two suits your organisation?
Neither is the better platform in the abstract; they are built for different problems. Diligent suits large or multi-entity groups that need entity management, risk, compliance and audit around the board portal. BoardServe suits organisations that want the effectiveness-review cycle, the evidence trail and AI oversight in one platform.
The Diligent case is breadth. Entity management across subsidiaries, enterprise risk, compliance and internal audit sit alongside the board portal, normally with a dedicated budget and a governance, risk and compliance function to run them. Where the board portal is one component of a wider GRC programme, buying it from the vendor that supplies the other components is a coherent decision, and the suite is built for exactly that.

The test that separates them is not feature count. It is which question keeps coming back at your board: "where is the record for this group of entities", or "how do we evidence that the board assured itself, and what happened to last year's actions".
Common mistakes when comparing the two
Budgeting from the G-Cloud rate. £700 a licence a year is a public-sector framework price. A commercial buyer who plans around it is planning around someone else's procurement route.
Pricing the portal and forgetting the modules. Where evaluation, minutes and messaging are separately purchasable, the portal quote is the start of the budget, not the budget. Ask for every product in scope, priced, on the first quote.
Treating an evaluation module as equivalent to a review cycle. A module that runs a questionnaire and a platform built around the Code's four lenses, with year-on-year comparison and tracked actions, produce different evidence. Decide which one the annual report needs to describe.
Confusing AI in the board pack with AI governance. Tools that draft a board book or summarise minutes make the secretariat faster. Structured maturity assessment of the organisation's own AI use is board oversight. Both are useful; only one answers a regulator.
Comparing two quotes scoped differently. Issue one written scope, covering the review lenses, the entities, the user population and the retention period, and price both platforms against it.
